Search Engine Optimization - 11 "Golden" Tips

Search Engine Optimization is the single most powerful tool available for webmasters and bloggers to promote their business. People "Google" all the time and it is said that if your website is search engine optimized, almost 3/4th of your work is done.
So what all things are "Essential" for SEO?
These are the "Golden" rules one must comply with to get the best result -

1. The title tag is critical
The title tag is the single most important piece of content for people who search.

  • Keep it short: Keep it to roughly 8-10 words (60 characters approx with spaces).
  • Lead with the most important careword for that particular page. Always start off with what is specific about the page and move to what is general. Many websites begin their title with their brand or organization name, and then follow with what is unique about the page. (This is a very common mistake, so check out your website.)

2. The description tag is recommended
The description tag is not nearly as important as the title. However, it does have some value. Write it as a summary and keep it also small, say under 30 words. It should be written in a compelling, clear manner clearly explaining in a short and sweet way what your blog is all about.

3. Light pages, and lean, quality HTML
The less HTML code you have, the better, as it makes it easier and faster for the search engine to index your page. Aim for a total page weight of 50 KB for any page (that’s including graphics). Certainly, anything over 100 KB is going to be slow, and some search engines don’t like pages that are over 100 KB.

4. Have a site map/index
People like site maps/indexes, and so do search engines. Make sure that the site map is available from the homepage, that it is presented in a text-based format, and that it is kept up to date.

5. Avoid Flash
I’ve nothing against Flash design except for the fact that I generally detest it. It’s such a waste of time; fourth rate TV advertising by people who will never get the chance to do a real TV ad. Search engines don’t like Flash either, and find it very hard to index Flash-based pages.

6. Build your website in static HTML
You don’t need a “dynamic” website unless you have dynamic content, such as airline seat availability and pricing which needs to be dynamically published from a database because it constantly changes. You may store your website in a database but you’re better off publishing it as a static HTML website. It’s cheaper, the pages will download faster, and search engines will find it easier to comprehensively index your website.

7. Avoid PDF's
One of the sure signs of a badly managed website is that it has lots of PDFs. Publishing content in PDF is usually a shortcut. Search engines have got better at indexing PDFs but it is still recommended that you publish a heading and summary in HTML.

8. Avoid frames
Frames are a very bad idea.

9. Watch your JavaScript
Any links that you have in JavaScript should also be published in HTML, otherwise the search engine won’t be able to follow those links. Rollovers are cool but they cause nothing but problems, so unless you have a brilliant technical team, avoid them.

10. Alternative text
As a rule you should have alternative text for every single image. However, the only alternative text that search engines recognize is for those images that are linked. Make sure you use descriptive, careword-rich text.

11. Keyword tags
Over the years, some websites tried to trick search engines by stuffing keyword tags with lots of popular words. Because of this, most search engines give very little value to keyword tags value to keyword tags

Summary - For small to medium-sized Web sites, search engines are the most important source of traffic. Unfortunately, getting noticed in the search engines isn't an easy job. A Web site manager can spend months getting a site listed in an engine, only to find it ranks 50th in their search results. It's hard to give universal tips for improving search engine ranking because each engine has its own set of rules. In general, though, a page will rank well for a particular query if the search terms appear in the TITLE tag, the META

How To Use Digg To Promote Your Blog

Social bookmarking sites are a big boom today. Twitter, Orkut, Facebook, Stumbleupon are only a few to name. But one of the most promising of all these is Digg.com and it can be used in a great way to promote your blog. Why is Digg different from others and why it carries such a HUGE potential to promote your blog?

On digg, you can submit your blog posts as articles. But you can do that on many other sites such as Ezinearticles.com. So what differentiates Digg from other similar sites?

On Digg all you have to do is submit a description of your article and not the full article as required by many articles submission sites. So the reader on Digg will have to come to your blog to read the whole post. This is a HUGE bonus for bloggers and I personally feel that it is very much justified also as all the hard work is done by the blogger and he should also get a share of the fruit.

Digg also displays your blog address just below the heading of your submission. To add to it all, you can submit any post of your blog directly to Digg by adding a "Digg It" button to your posts automatically.

By placing this button, your blog readers can also submit your posts on Digg and this will attract more visitors. To Learn how to add a "Digg" button in your blogger posts, click HERE.

So don't waste anymore time. Register today on Digg.com and start promoting your blog.

Why Is Blog Commenting Important?

You must be wondering what is the importance of blog commenting? Why should you comment on someone's post on someone's blog? Blog commenting is a fantastic way to increase your external links. Here is how it works -

One of the most important measure you must take for search engine optimization (SEO) is to increase your links on other sites. Google automatically increases the search rank of your blog/website as the number of external links to your site increases. External links means the blogs or websites (other than yours) from where, someone can reach your blog directly. Now you must be getting the picture.

Whenever you comment on someone's blog post, you usually post your blog's address also there. That comment page serves as an external link to your blog. And as you keep on commenting, you are doing search engine optimization automatically. You can check how many external links point to your blog in your Google Webmaster Tools under the heading "Your site on the web" by clicking on "Links to your site".

Also, when you comment on the blog post, make sure that you write something related on your blog to that blog post. You can give a link to your blog's main page or to the related post on your blog so that targeted audience may be directed to the related blog post on your blog directly. (Don't forget to shorten the blog post link by Bit.ly or Tinyurl.com.)

So whenever you are looking up the internet for some good articles, make sure that you comment. Remember - "Appreciate To Get Appreciated".

How To Get All Your Blog Posts Indexed (And Not The Latest 26 Only)

So you did everything you knew about getting your blog indexed in Google. You submitted your blog in Google Webmaster tools, You sbmitted your feed address as site map. What now what? Even after a wait of 4-5 days, you find that only 26 URL's are submitted to Google for indexing and not all. That's very frustrating. But that's logical by Google. Feeds only submit only the latest 26 posts. So If you have started a new blog and you have less that 26 posts on your blog, this method will suffice for you.(What is indexing and how to do it?) But If you were blogging since a long time and have more than 26 posts in your archive, you will face this problem. So what is the solution? How to get all your posts submitted and indexed by Google? I was facing the same problem with my blog and after an extensive search, I found this solution. Here is how you can do it. -

If you have more than 100 posts and want to post all to Google Sitemap, add these two as new sitemaps in your Google Webmaster account -
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

If you have more than 200 posts and want to post all to Google Sitemap, add these three new sitemaps in your Google Webmaster account -

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=201&max-results=100

If you have more than 300 posts and want to post all to Google Sitemap, add these four new sitemaps in your Google Webmaster account -

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=201&max-results=100

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=301&max-results=100
As you can see the above, start-index is the post number to start returning results from and max-results is the how many posts you want returned from whatever the number you state on start-index. The maximum max-results is 500 (from many blogger) but to be safe, it is recommended to put 100.

After you do as stated above, within 10 minutes, you will find that these sitemaps will be accepted and all your URL's will be submitted for indexing. Indexing will take some time, say a week or so.This is THE solution for getting all your posts indexed.

Get Your Blog Indexed By Google Faster

So you made a blog and wrote many articles. You are updating your blog every day with new articles and great stuff but all your surprise, your blog's traffic is increasing at snail's pace!!! What's wrong? There may be many reasons but one of the most important is that your blog is not getting indexed in Google.

What can you do to get it indexed faster?
  1. First submit your blog to popular search engines like Google, Yahoo etc. Do it NOW.
  2. Login to your Google Webmaster account. You can do it through your Google account.
  3. Click on Add a site and enter your blog address.
  4. You will have to verify your account. Webmaster will tell you step by step how to do it.
  5. After verifying your blog's, you need to input a sitemap address. Click on your blog address on the home page of your webmaster tools. Then on the left hand side, click on site configuration and then sitemaps. Then click on submit a sitemap and in that enter your feed address as - http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full
  6. It will take time before Google indexes all your pages and all of them become visible in Google search.
  7. Now everytime you post a new post, it will get automatically indexed as soon as 30 minutes through your feeds.
  8. Usually, amateur bloggers don't link their blog posts well enough so that Google Bot don't get a link to every post of your blog. It is a wise thing to post a blog post with the header "My Blog's Posts" in your blog. If you have a high number of posts already and you don't want this post to come to your home page, you can post it in a back date by going into the post options while writing the post. It should look something like THIS.
  9. Finally, while writing posts, make sure you use keywords carefully so that it's search becomes better in search engines.
The method described above is a must for new bloggers who have just started their blogs and have only a few posts (Less than 26 by default). If you are an old blogger and have many posts (more than 26 by default), you will find a problem that Google will index only the latest 26 posts and not all. You can get all your posts submitted and indexed by a simple solution. Read it HERE.

The Golden Rule For Succeeding With Adsense

Adsense is does not need an introduction here. Everyone knows this modern marvel which has made possible billions earn billions. Almost every other blogger today joins Adsense for earning money online. But how many of you actually succeed? I mean even if you are getting a 100$ check every 2 months or so, do you call it success? I don't think so. Websites and Blogs today earn in thousands of dollars per month! Techcrunch.com, for example, earns a whooping 2,00,000$ per month!!! What is the "Golden Rule" that gave these SUPER BLOGS the success they have today?

There are more than one for sure, and the list is ever growing. But one "Golden Rule" which, you can call, the first step in moving towards success with Adsense is selecting your "NICHE" properly and writing about it. What I mean to say is that your blog should be targeted to a particular audience and not to the whole world.

Google's advertising is very simple. It does not imply very strict rules on allowing blogs to enroll for Adsense. And it shows targeted ads on your blogs. But for success, the word "TARGETED" needs to be understood.

Once you start your blog about a particular thing, write articles related only to that particular topic. For example, I write articles on this blog about earning money online, affiliate marketing, earning traffic, blogging tips, cool gadgets to have on your blog, etc etc. But I stick to the same topic. I don't write about the latest century which Ricky Ponting scored against England at Lord's!!!

Why This Is Important?
As the content of your blog increases day by day, the matching of Ads displayed by Google on your blog also increases and the ads displayed are very similar to your posts and keywords you have used in your blog. So a visitor searching for affiliate marketing article will get ads referring to other sites offering this in which the visitor will definitely interested in and the chances of him clicking on the ad increases many folds.

So friends writing articles related to your niche is of utmost importance for generating decent revenue from Adsense. According to me, this is the most important thing to increase your earnings. Don't agree with me? Do let me know what you feel is the most important thing to do to earn money.

Hide Your Affiliate Links To Avoid Making A Bad Impression

When you enroll yourself in an affiliate and are willing to make money by referring your blog's visitors to a particular site through the affiliate link that you have posted in your post, it is better to hide that link with another link. It's just because when a potential customer hover's over the link, he can see that there is often a word in the link like "ref=2378283" or "Ref Id 2903ws9" etc. It gives a clear indication that the link is going to give you a monetary benefit. Even though the offer you posted was genuine, still the visitors may feel that this is a trick to earn money and it's a waste of time to them. So it is better if you hide the link behind the words you have written to be clicked in order to go to that particular website.
How Can You Do It?
Use a good site for link conversion. For example Tinyurl.com or Bit.ly (Which Twitter Uses). It gives you a unique small link in place of your original link and it is FREE.
Try it and avoid making a bad impression.

Link Within Your Blog To Increase Backlinks And Traffic

As I had previously mentioned in my previous post, linking your blog posts with keywords you use in new posts is a great way to make the visitor engrossed in your blog for a longer time. Many authors write only half the article and link the other half to another post. I don't use this way because I feel that it's frustrating for the reader to go from one page to another just in the search of what he wants. I rather place links of some other related posts in my blog which the visitor might be interested in.

For example, if you have written a post on how to increase traffic to your blog, then you might place a link to another post on your blog about search engine optimization. This way, the reader finds everything he needs and is often satisfied.

Placing links within your blog to other posts of your blog has a few more advantages.
  • It refers your visitors to older posts which many visitors usually don't have time to look to.
  • In case someone tries to copy your article and place it on your blog, then your link also goes with it (unless he removes it manually that is). It is a feature in blogger that when you copy anything from a blog and paste it on another blog, everything goes with it, the headings, posts, points, pictures and the links. So even if someone took your post without your permission, he actually did a favor to you by giving a backlink to you!
So always remember to place links within your posts referring to more relevant posts in your blog.
